Why the Galleria Borghese is famous and what you can’t miss

When we think of Rome, we inevitably picture the Colosseum, the Vatican or the Trevi Fountain. However, there is a place that combines art, history, architecture and exclusivity in a way that is hard to match: the Galleria Borghese. Visiting this palace means stepping into the home of one of the most influential families of Baroque Rome. Want to know why the Galleria Borghese is famous? We’ll tell you everything.

What is the difference between the Galleria Borghese and Villa Borghese?

Are you planning your trip to Rome? Take note, as it is common to come across two names that can cause some confusion. Both are historically and geographically connected, but today they serve different purposes. Understanding the difference between the Galleria Borghese and Villa Borghese will help you better organize your visit and also appreciate the cultural value of this important and beautiful complex in the city.

The masterpieces of the Galleria Borghese: Bernini, Caravaggio and Raphael

We are facing a unique museum, conceived from its origin as a private collection created for delight. Cardinal Scipione Borghese, a great patron of the 17th century, assembled a collection that we now consider essential for understanding the Italian Baroque and Renaissance. Thanks to the masterpieces of the Galleria Borghese, artists such as Bernini, Caravaggio and Raphael are represented in an exceptional ensemble that is difficult to match in any other museum.

Why a guided tour of the Galleria Borghese makes the difference

The Galleria Borghese is one of the most fascinating museums in Rome and, at the same time, one of the most exclusive. Located inside Villa Borghese, this palace houses an unparalleled collection of sculptures, paintings and some of the most brilliant works of art in Italian and European art history.

Taking a guided tour of the Galleria Borghese is the best way to enjoy a museum where each room is designed as a harmonious ensemble of architecture, decoration and works of art. Here, the experience is not based on quantity, but on quality and on the way you contemplate pieces by artists such as Bernini, Caravaggio or Raphael. It is not a museum where only the exhibition matters; it is an environment you will never stop admiring, from the floors to the ceiling, everything has something to tell you.

BOOK NOW

Plan your visit to the Borghese Gallery

The Borghese Gallery is a must-see for art lovers. Located in the beautiful gardens of Villa Borghese, it is one of Rome’s most important museums, as it houses an extraordinary collection of sculptures and paintings by artists such as Bernini, Caravaggio, Raphael, and Titian. The museum is actually a 17th-century palace, which gives it a unique character but also influences the visit due to its limited size. Tickets must be purchased in advance, as access is regulated: capacity is limited to timed slots of two hours.

General access to the Borghese Gallery and accessibility

As this is a historic building, accessibility at the Borghese Gallery is carefully organized. Access is possible via a stairlift located to the left of the main staircase, or through the rear entrance at Piazzale Scipione Borghese, which avoids stairways and allows full access to the sculpture floor. To reach the first floor, there is a small-capacity elevator, and the museum provides adapted wheelchairs. In addition, personalized assistance is available upon request, as well as an informational video call service for deaf visitors.

Purchasing tickets for the Borghese Gallery

The Borghese Gallery is one of the most in-demand museums in Rome, so we strongly recommend purchasing tickets in advance. Access is strictly controlled and organized in specific two-hour time slots, which means tickets often sell out. Buying in advance ensures your visit and helps you better plan the rest of your day in the city. Knowing your visit time also allows you to plan a walk through Villa Borghese and enjoy the beautiful surroundings of the palace.

In certain cases, tickets will not be sent by email and must instead be collected in person at the meeting point indicated in the booking confirmation. Information regarding the collection point, as well as specific delivery conditions, is clearly detailed during the purchase process and in the confirmation email received by the user.

Borghese Gallery opening hours 2026

The Borghese Gallery is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.. The last entry is allowed at 5:45 p.m., so it is advisable to arrive with enough time in advance. The ticket office opens at 8:30 a.m. and remains open until one hour before the museum closes. As access is organized in timed slots and visit duration is limited, we recommend respecting the time indicated on your ticket and planning your route in advance.

The gallery is closed on Mondays, as well as on December 25th and January 1st.
